Prof Marcella María Althaus-Reid Ph.D

Marcella Althaus-Reid is Professor of Contextual Theology at New College,University of Edinburgh, Scotland. Born in Rosario, Argentina, she was brought up and lived in Buenos Aires. She did her first theological degree in ISEDET, the Instituto Superior Evangelico de Estudios Teologicos ( Evangelical Faculty of Theology) of Buenos Aires where she studied with theologians such as Jose Miguez Bonino, J Severino Croatto and Beatriz Melano Couch. ISEDET is an ecumenical faculty where many liberation theologians have taught and been trained.

Professor Althaus-Reid came to Scotland where she worked organising a conscientization process inspired by Paulo Freire in a deprived area of Dundee. She obtained her PhD from St Andrews University, Scotland on a thesis on the influence of Paul Ricoeur on the methodology of Liberation Theology.
